XXX: A Boston-based program is teaching teenagers to think critically about porn videos. Its part of Start Strong, a peer-leadership training program funded by the citys public-health department.Porn videos are not only a source of sex information for teens, they also shape their ideas of intimacy and masculinity. According to a recent study, nearly one-quarter of students said that pornography was a realistic way to learn about sex. And almost one-third of them thought that B.D.S.M. was a good way to get off.The study was conducted by associate professor of media studies at Indiana University, Bryant Paul, and director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, Debby Herbenick. They surveyed 614 teenagers aged 14-18.Porn videos were found to be effective in teaching students about sex, but the content of the material wasnt. For example, more than half of students saw a man ejaculating on a womans face. But only a tiny number agreed with the idea that people liked to have their hair pulled.While the study doesnt show whats caused a shift in the types of porn videos students watch, it does say that porn isnt the only sex-focused class offered in high schools. There are also comprehensive sex ed courses that talk about topics such as abstinence, pregnancy prevention, and birth control.However, there are few classes that address female desire and anatomy.
